The monumental project Kumu V'Naaleh is being directed by Rav Dovid Koleditsky, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivas Etz Chaim in Lakewood, N.J. The initiative will be bringing a core group of families from Lakewood to Ma’ale Amos in the coming year, with the goal of establishing a thriving Torah community for American B’nei Torah.
Initially, it was proposed to Rav Malkiel Kotler, Rosh Yeshiva of Beth Medrash Govoha (BMG), as an adjunctive community to BMG in Lakewood, N.J. The Rosh Yeshiva was greatly interested, until Covid halted the discussions.
Now the plan has resumed and is being implemented with extraordinary speed B'chasdei Hashem.
Where is Ma’ale Amos?
Ma’ale Amos is a Chareidi yishuv 12 miles southeast of Yerushalayim (about a 30- minute car drive away) on the eastern slopes of the Yehuda Desert. Established in 1981 by the Jewish Agency and Aish HaTorah (one of its founders was Rabbi Uri Zohar zt”l), it is currently home primarily to Chareidi Russians and Americans. It is named after the Navi Amos who lived in the nearby village of Tekoa and is under the Rabbinic direction of New York native Rabbi Ze’ev Charlop.
THE PLAN
Available now are 35 brand new 2-3 bedroom cottages, with another 30 large American style-houses being built and scheduled for move-in this mid-winter. Construction of more housing for the community is already being planned. Housing prices are considered very attractive, and there is an existing Chinuch structure in place which will be expanded to accommodate American children. On the employment front, the N.J.-based real estate company Riverside is planning to open an office in the community which will create many job opportunities for community members.
Kumu V’Naaleh is accepting applications for an additional 10-15 kollel families to join the Lakewood Kollel in Ma’ale Amos, as well as families of Bnei Torah to join the general community. The community is accepting applicants from across North America and Eretz Yisrael.
